Why Mamma Cakes?

Rituals surrounding birth, motherhood, and babies have mostly disappeared, yet these events are the most transformative times of our lives.

Historical cakes (e.g., grunting cakes) were made by or for birthing women to keep them occupied in early labor and to give them much-needed fuel for after birth. Mamma cakes began with the wish to revive this tradition and give birthing women and people bento cakes, a cake just for them to celebrate their amazing capacity to birth a baby!

Mamma cakes believes that motherhood and families deserve a treat, no matter what stage of life they are in. So we offer cakes for pregnancy, birth, motherhood, babies, and children.

Pregnancy, birthing, and motherhood is hard work. Treat a pregnant woman or person, someone who just gave birth or an existing mother to a cake just for them. We recommend Bento cakes.

Treat a baby, toddler, or child

That first taste of sugar is magical! Treat a baby to their first smash cake or a toddler birthday cake. We recommend petit cakes or cupcakes. For children’s birthdays or for gatherings we recommend larger cakes (20cm or larger).

We source local and organic ingredients whenever possible. All items are handmade and made to order. Special touches make our cakes not just visually appealing but delicious. For example, we make our vanilla extract, use amazing local Swiss chocolate, and use the freshest eggs.

Jessica Laine Carmeli

This Super Mamma wears many capes! Jessica is a baker, scientist (PhD in epidemiology), academic, consultant, and writer. She wears all these capes to empower women to birth and mother to their fullest capacity by reclaiming childbirth and supporting matrescence. She lives in Fribourg, CH in a multi-culture (Italo/American/Swiss) home with her husband and 2 kiddos.
